USB 3.0 port not working

I bought a new computer recently, and it has three USB2.0 ports and a single USB3.0 port. The 2.0 ports work fine, but the 3.0 seems to not read any data, whether from USB 2.0 or 3.0 devices. Things plugged into it receive power, but I can't access any data. Plugging my wireless mouse receiver into it doesn't allow me to operate my mouse.

Not really sure what to do to troubleshoot this.

You probably don't have a driver for the USB 3 controller. But it's hard to say anything more without those specs you are promising. (Output from dmidecode would be a nice start!)

I thought that it might be the driver too, but from what I read online, USB 3.0 support has come built-in with the kernel since 2.6.31, while I'm on 2.6.38.7. Unless I'm misunderstanding this somehow?

Did you run lilo to update the config before rebooting?

MSI = Message Signaled Interrupts

From the kernel source documentation:

A Message Signaled Interrupt is a write from the device to a special
address which causes an interrupt to be received by the CPU.

The MSI capability was first specified in PCI 2.2 and was later enhanced
in PCI 3.0 to allow each interrupt to be masked individually. The MSI-X
capability was also introduced with PCI 3.0. It supports more interrupts
per device than MSI and allows interrupts to be independently configured.

Devices may support both MSI and MSI-X, but only one can be enabled at
a time.

I don't really understand the significance of an interrupt. Is this going to have any other noticeable effect, whether good or bad?

I don't think you'll see anything in this case, other than your USB 3 port working.
