Two remarks on slackpkg

Hi,

I just ran today's big update on -current on my build server. Everything went OK so far. I have two remarks on slackpkg.

Here's the commented section for Slackware stable:

Code:
#----------------------------------------------------------------
# Slackware-14.1
#----------------------------------------------------------------
# USE MIRRORS.SLACKWARE.COM (DO NOT USE FTP - ONLY HTTP FINDS A NEARBY MIRROR)
And here's the corresponding section for -current:

Code:
#----------------------------------------------------------------
# Slackware-current
#----------------------------------------------------------------
# USE MIRRORS.SLACKWARE.COM (FINDS A NEARBY MIRROR)
# ftp://mirrors.slackware.com:/slackware/slackware-current/
# http://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware/slackware-current/
One does list the FTP mirrors, the other does not.

Second thing is if you use this in France, most of the time you'll get redirected to the OVH mirror:

Code:
# FRANCE (FR)
# ftp://mirror.ovh.net/mirrors/ftp.slackware.com/slackware-14.1/
# http://mirror.ovh.net/mirrors/ftp.slackware.com/slackware-14.1/
Over the years, I've found this mirror to be unusable, since it almost always throws back GPG errors. OVH is infamous for its bad quality of service in France. My suggestion would be to get rid of it.

Keep up the good work,

Niki

heanet.ie is reliable, not overworked, and in Ireland which is ok if you're the North half of france.

I lowered the priority for the ovh mirror - see if that makes a difference. I'd rather not remove them completely since they offered to host the mirror, but if it's consistently unreliable, then perhaps I'll reconsider. In the meantime, let me know if lowering the priority of the mirror helps.

I mailed them a couple times about the lack of reliability of their mirror, but never got a response.

OVH are often in the top ten list of spam enabling ISPs, at least according to SpamHaus. I've gotten TONS of spam from ovh servers over the years.

http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/networks/

They aren't there now, but it wasn't that long ago they were #7 or so.

OVH's CentOS servers always come with the latest kernel from kernel.org and not the kernel shipping with RHEL/CentOS. I once mailed them and explained briefly the concept of "Enterprise Linux", but they replied that "it's better to always have the latest kernel for reasons of security". I'll let you judge on their general competence. As far as I'm concerned, I had enough troubles with OVH to avoid them like the plague.
