Toshiba Satellite Pro L70: Atheros AR8161 Ethernet card not working

Hi,

I have a brand-new Toshiba Satellite Pro L70 (see also previous post for the video card problem) with an Atheros AR8161 network card, which turns out to be a notwork card.

Any idea how to get this kind of hardware working with Slackware64 14.1?

From googling some I found it needs the alx module. From what I read I think you need to patch your kernel to get it to work.

Unfortunately this refuses to compile on a stock Slackware64 14.1 installation. Tried both with the HUGE and the GENERIC kernel.

It looks like the 3.14rc kernel does have alx built-in, maybe that's an option.
