Patching 5.10.0 source with both rc1 and rc2, and also extracting the 5.11-rc2 tarball. My standard procedure is copy the most recent -current config and accept all defaults on make oldconfig, in addition to building ext4 into the kernel with make menuconfig; then make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install.

I don't need it, was just having fun, and was interested if it was just me. The only other time this has happened, there was a newer kernel released the same day.

My procedure is:
make mrproper
Copy .config file.
make oldconfig
make -j8
make modules_install

Never had any issues.

If you have Haswell (Intel) graphics and have had problems with recent kernels, this may (or may not) be the problem,
