Syslinux bare.i 9.0 booting fails

On an older notebook, Syslinux fails when trying to boot bare.i from floppy. Talking with the syslinux folks, they think its an A20 problem (and not worth the bother of fixing). [I've verified this as a syslinux problem with other distributions other than Slackware.]
I have found, however, that GRUB works without problem. (Don't know about LILO, however.)
Is it feasible to change the booter and rebuild bare.i? I presume I'll need the sources and build procedures and may need to twiddle things a bit to make everything fit.
Suggestions appreciated.
