SWGEmu on Slackware 14.2

I want to share with the community my experience on running the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator on the latest stable Slackware.
This community project brings back the (in my opinion) best Star Wars based sandbox MMORPG from the land of the abandonware.
Here you can find all the info you will ever need about the project and the game.
For the installation you will need:
  • A copy of the original game client. If you do not have any, just download it or torrent it from wherever you want. No piracy issues since the game is considered abandonware, but in any case I won't post direct download links here. It's super easy to find
  • A Slackware64 with multilib system
  • wine (I used the 2.21 package in the AlienBob repo)

Now to install the game:
  1. Run the original client setup with wine, zero issues.
  2. Download the SWGEmu launcher linux package from here.
  3. extract the content of the tar and execute the executable SWGEmuLaunchpad (it's marked as an ubuntu-12.04 package but runs in Slackware just fine)
  4. In the menu bar, go to settings, then "Install from SWG" and navigate to the folder where you have installed the original client in step 1
  5. The Launchpad will then install the emulator and download all the patches. Once this is done, press the start button, enter your login credentials (you can register for free at the first link in the post) and you are ready to go!!
The game runs very well with wine on my crappy i5 integrated gpu, no issues so far.

I hope you have a better experience playing there than I did. I installed it a few months back after seeing SWGEmu mentioned in a gaming article. From what I understand it runs the original version and and runs perfectly. The downside I found was that I was the only player on the server. I made 2 chars that started in different locations and after playing for around 20 hours can truthfully say I only ever saw 1 other player.
It's a pity because SWG was one of the greatest old school MMOs ever made and deserves to continue on. I hope you're able to spread the word and get some players to join.
Good luck in your endeavor.

I didn't play much, just roamed around mos aisley, and perhaps because it was on sunday but I saw plenty of people around and the server population counter was around 1000 when i logged in, so i guess it is not soo dead, everyday at least.
