For various reasons, I am no longer going to be using Slackware. I am migrating to a combination of CentOS and Fedora (to mirror the RHEL environment with which I use at work and do development).
However, I do not want to see swaret die. It fills a much needed void, and has a great future. If someone could step forward that has PERL experience, uses Slackware, and has time to do some coding on the side, please let me know. After a grace period, the project can be yours.
yesterday i tried for gware or freerock gnome, i found tht new ver are no more available!! not even for slack 11
so i had to download dropline!!!
thought i will try swaret and found, most probably, no more maintenance..
WHO WILL SURVIVE?? (among many choices) the plain slackers !!
i was using slackpkg , which is already included in the distro, for updating to official slack packages. hope this will take over all autoupdating jobs.
Projects come and go... Dropline also lost its main developer, but a few great people continued to maintain everything even better. Same thing might happen with Swaret. There are also alternatives, which are probably also of the pretty similar quality.
Don't worry
IMHO:
- Dropline is absolutely best Gnome for Slackware
- I am still using 2 years old swaret (Bash version) without any problems
I hope Swaret continues to function and be maintained. I just started using it the other day, and kinda like it as part of a great team: Slackpkg & Swaret. However, part of the reason I started using swaret is because slackpkg doesn't seem to be working properly lately. It will do jobs involving one package, like remove/install/search, but stuff like Upgrade and Update seems to be acting funny server-side.
Well, as mentioned above, an old swaret is better than no swaret, and as long as there are mirrors, it will continue to work, right?
Well .... I don't really care . Not to sound too mean or inconsiderate, etc., I can manage with whatever is available, if not, then I write something myself to fill any "void".

Try giving the slapt-get/gslapt programs a try. I'm currently using those to update & install packages and it has worked fine so far. If a package isn't there that I want, I'll just use installpkg.
I am satisfied with slackpkg , keeps my boxes up to date and does not screw up like swaret has done to some of my installations ... maybe i was too lazy to read the changelogs ;-)
I hope Swaret continues to function and be maintained.
let us see, the maintaner had a nice dream
this part form swaret page

I've uploaded into the download section the latest test branch. It is writen in PERL, and is about 75% of the way to a stable release. Soon, swaret will be a 100% replacement for pkgtools (that is my goal).

earlier i had enough time so i try manage to make package of my own, "make and checkinstall" now it is difficult, busy with my works. i didnt even checked lq forum for months!!
angryfirelord,
will try slapt-get, later!!, what this gslapt exactly does? seems like a gui from gnome for slaptget!!
nutronix, me too, it will keep the machine uptodate with official packages..
I don't use a package management tool either, and I'm happy this way. I would be upset though if both Freerock and Gware projects die. I know that most people say Dropline is the best; however it would be nice to have a less intrusive alternative (shadow -> PAM business etc.).
Btw, Gware page says they're testing 2.16.1 for 11.0. Apparently things are going slowly due to lack of time, but it's safe to say that Gware is not quite dead yet.
