Slackware is for many years now my favorite Linux Distribution.
Recently I downloaded Slackware 14.0 and while it currently is not working out for me I realy appreciate the work/energy Patrick Volkerding gives to maintaining Slackware.
So even given the fact that for the moment Slackware 14.0 is not for me, I just ordered the DVD from the Slackware store to support Patrick financially.
I realy urge people to do the same and order something from the Slackware store or give a donation since often we tend to forget about the people behind the project.
You can use this space to tell us about your experiences with Slackware 14, so that we can try and find a way to solve the things that are currently not working for you
I wish I live in a developed country. Everything is always more difficult in developing countries (e.g: I can't use my debit card as if it is a credit card, paypal doesn't support the local bank linking, and I got no news since I apply for the AlertPay card (http://www.payza.org))
Partly I think it is my fault that I'm currently too broke to apply for Credit Card hahaha.
Everything were much smoother when I worked in Singapore (everything is run efficiently and interconnected, you can even use your train/bus card to buy groceries)
Having said that, I think Slackware is a great distribution and the only distribution that I wish could last forever (of course hopefully it won't change its philosophy - simplicity, security, stability and being the closest breed to UNIX). All thanks to Patrick for his efforts all these years, and hopefully he could get a stable long-term team to help him with.
And of course I hope I won't be too broke for too long too Lol.
Eric,
I too would like to support Patrick (Slackware). In fact I sent him an email and got no response. Is there a way to make a
donation via Paypal, or some other source, so that the complete amount is routed to Patrick or the appropriate
Slackware folks, without using the store. I typically download my ISO, use it for a while, and then make a Donation.
Recently, I've been Distro hopping so much in search of the correct Distro because of the Unity (Gnome 2.x) Fiasco that
I haven't made any Donations.....Slackware with XFCE is what I've settled on so far. I've had some learnings, but those
are to be expected.
Patrick does indeed not get direct money from the sales or donations, he is paid a share from the earnings in the Store.
I do not know of a way to donate money to Pat without involving the Store. He does not have a public PayPal account.
Other Slackware coreteam members do not get any of this money by the way - the profits go to Patrick, and the people behind the Store (it's essentially the FreeBSD Mall, which also runs a web store for Slackware).
public paypal account by Pat (or as a team) is a good idea (but of course products purchase still go thru store).
This additional resources can be used to do more marketing for Slackware (I think Slackware is popular around geek, and a portion of IT professionals, but not so for home users or some others). Even for servers area, I heard a lot have moved/chosen Ubuntu or CentOS.
But Slackware ranking on distrowatch has been pretty good though, ranked 12 to 13 for last 12 months.

On the top left of the menu in the Slackware store, you have a "Donate" button. You can donate using a standard debit card or using Paypal. I've done the latter and I believe that the full amount of my donation went to Patrick Volkerding (minus the small amount taken by Paypal I suppose).

That is a wrong assumption. That PayPal button belongs to the Slackware Store. Pat will surely get part, but not all of what you donate (excluding the few percents creamed off by PayPal itself).
This recent thread gives intructions for donating to the Slackware Project without a middleman. It may not all go to Patrick, but this cuts out PayPal's portion at least.

As Alien Bob mentioned in another post. The folks that run the FreeBSD Mall also run the Slackware Store. Donations mailed to Brentwood California (Claremont Drive or Sand Creek Drive) go to to the Slackware Store for processing.
My thoughts ...
Since Mr. Volkerding worked out this business arrangement with the store to handle donations to Slackware Linux, any revenue sharing with the Slackware Store for donations is agreeable to Mr. Volkderding. He gets to keep working on Slack instead of handling business transactions every day.
I understand the desire to get 100% of a donation to Mr. Volkerding. Presumably the business arrangement between he and those running the store is to their mutual benefit and hopefully keeps Slackware Linux (both Slackware software and the Slackware Store) going strong.

Agreed. Best to do it the way he wants and not meddle.
