Question Suggestions for video editor for Slackware?

Hello all,

I am not a digital video buff so never paid much attention to the tools.

But my oldest daughter is, and I plan to install a video editor system for her, for her upcoming birthday.

I have tentatively settled on cinelerra as the core app, simply because it is one I have looked into (but superficially until now). But I really don't know what else I might want/need for producing navigable DVDs, etc.

So my question for those in the know: What do you recommend for a killer video editor/production suite for Slackware 13.1?

Target platform:
AMD 64 X2 - 2.7GHz
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
nVidia GeForce 6150SE
Intel sound
1600x900 Display
Dual boot: Slackware 13.1-32 (main), Slackware 13.1-64 (pure)
(Preference to install on 32, but 64 OK if necesary)
Fluxbox

Thanks for all replies!

Openshot has gotten some good press.

And it's not available for linux yet, but keep an eye on Lightworks.

What format are you shooting your footage in?
For miniDV we use Kino to capture/edit DV footage. Mjpegtools (mpeg2enc + y4m/yuv filters) to encode. DVDStyler to author.

For our mpeg2 hard drive camcorder we use avidemux to do simple I frame editing and DVDStyler to author.

I think the only format she can shoot herself at this time is avi (from a Canon IS2 camera). But once I set up her "studio" I am sure we will have to get her a camcorder...

Thanks, and you mentioned a few apps that I am not familiar with so will look into those, too.

i use avidemux for conversion.

i suppose the video software included in ubuntu studio would be a good starting point, as that is geared towards design and editing. the included programs for video (as listed by the wiki) are:

PiTiVi - a video editing program (Not included in latest release)
Kino - a non-linear digital video editor
Stopmotion - a stop-motion animation movie creator
VLC media player - a media player
Xjadeo - a simple video player that gets sync from JACK transport

you should be able to find a lot of these in either slackbuilds, and if not, you can definitely build from source.

hope this helps

Avidemux works fine for simple editing of *.avi files. I've used it to cut dead spots, join multiple files together, and stuff like that there.

Klaatu, the alien podcaster, likes Blender (listen to episode 3x08 at this link). Klaatu does professional multimedia editing.

I've looked at Blender and decided it was a lot more than I wanted or needed to tangle with.

The blender dot org site seems to be unresponsive right now.

I have not had time to build it yet, but will do so over the weekend.

Thanks to all others who mentioned kdenlive also!

She is already a Blender user and fan.

I have built avidemux overnight, but not yet used it - thanks! I'll let you know how it works out.
