When I run it, it greets me with a GUI where I can enter my credentials.
Upon entering the credentials, the GUI disappears, the tray icon shows up as normal, but no other window opens. right clicking on the tray icon works, but i cannot open any of the windows either.
Can you help me figure out what went wrong on my system?
I have read the troubleshooting part of the aforementioned docs page and i do have openAL and libxtc_dxtn, however i did not find any compat32 package. I got openAL from alienbob's repository and libxtc_dxtn from slackbuilds.
have you tried running from console and reading what it says. I have a older slackware current and multilib for it and its working for me.
perhaps has something to do with vulkan?
FWIW I have a working Steam on 14.2 even despite that I've modded it around with a few minor losses to get Pure ALSA on 14.2. BUT I have had odd occurrences on both 14.2 and -Current where the GUI did not behave well after one of the common Steam Updates. Each time I just checked console for any "sore thumb" but often just tried readjustments temporarily like picking some recently installed game and switching whatever state it was in with the checkbox for "Force use of Steam Component" like Overlay or Proton... also the "Verify local files" checker. That commonly cause some sort of readjustment from Steam Update that fixed the issue.
Totally aside but possibly an anecdote that could help - I have an old Steam install on Win 7 that I hadn't used in almost 4 years and when a recent native port for Tomb Raider had excruciating mouse behaviour I wanted to see if it was the games fault or the port fault. Steam tried to start up and update but failed after a few times (lot of updates in 4 years I suppose) and finally I got an error saying I should
reinstall Steam. After checking that my games would be safe (and they are on a separate drive so they were) I reinstalled and it worked a treat after about 20 minutes of updates. The game still takes over the mouse and keyboard to some degree to accommodate Quick time Events but at least the barriers to full rotation with Mouse Look was not there. The really odd thing is that back in Linux on that game, mouse behavior greatly improved and I have no idea if it was due to Steam or some effect on my gaming mouse since some gaming Input Devices remember settings created with the more configurable manufacturer apps common to most input devices in Windows.
The salient point of that last bit is more that there's always reinstall of Steam to overcome problems created by Steam Updates. I've just never had to (yet) in Slackware.

Hello,
thank you for your reply. Yes I have attached a pastebin to my OP with steam terminal output, but I could not understand anything obvious telling me what went wrong.
Hello enorbet,
I tried reinstalling steam with removepkg then installpkg the one from alien's repository before asking for help there. I did not do anything else related to games library. Perhaps my way of reinstalling was wrong. One thing that struck me is that it didnt seem to update before prompting me for log in.
Enorbet was right, I did not uninstall steam properly. I deleted ~/.local/share/Steam , started it again and it updated itself properly, problem solved.
Thank you for your help.
