startx--insconsistent execution, except as root

Whenever I try to run startx as a regular user it sometimes executes and at other times it fails. I have to manually restart my machine. When it does execute, the window manager loads, but eventually freezes, and again, I have to reboot. What's the cause? What's the fix?

To answer these questions, have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors.

I have experienced (a long time ago) that my system froze with dri enabled in xorg.conf. You can try to disable it. If you don't have /etc/X11/xorg.conf, you can generate it with xorg -configure. It will be placed in /root/, so you will have to manually move it to /etc/X11/, or place it somewhere and use startx -config /somewhere/xorg.conf

Seriously?

What video card? What drivers? What window manager? What is "fails"?

As per zirias' advice, thanks, except as a newbie, I have no idea what to look for. /home/barth/.xsession-errrors does not exist on my computer, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log is quite a mountain of data for an apprentice like me, both of which follow:

Dinithion, or whoever may be privy, can I just comment out "Load dri" & "Load dri2" in the following section of xorg.conf, using the "#" comment character?:

Section "Module"
Load "extmod"
Load "dbe"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
Load "dri2"
EndSection

Thanks. I'll try it. But first, what is "dri" & "dri2"?

I don't know why there is a "dri2" module, but generally, dri means "direct rendering infrastructure" and is needed for hardware 3d acceleration on chips with opensource drivers (so, NOT nvidia, they use their own driver model).

So if I'm not using accelerated graphics, I don't need it?

You actually need

Code:
Disable "dri"
Disable "dri2"
Instead of simply commenting out the "load" lines.

There is a good chance, by the way, that X won't even start if you disable DRI and DRI2, though.

Is it as easy to enable as to disable?

Just remove the Disable lines.

Just a quick additional thought: If it REALLY works without dri, the problem could be located in the kernel driver for your graphics card. Maybe update the kernel (by using the latest distribution package OR compiling your own) would help. You can check /var/log/messages for traces of a kernel "oops"
