ssh Start Up Problem

I am running Slackware 10.1.0 and am having problems getting ssh to start. It was running just fine until about a week ago.

I have tried starting via the following:

/etc/rc.d/rc.sshd start

/usr/sbin/sshd

I receive no message and nothing is written to the syslog file but the service does not start, confirmed via netstat command.

Is there anything else I can try or what options do I have? I am new to Slackware and not sure where to go from here.

There is plenty in the secure file. Most of it dealing with our mail server (popa3d) and an occasional in.comstat. Not much else that I could readily see.

A little more information....

I can get it to run in debug mode:

/usr/sbin/sshd -d

And I can connect, etc. It just won't start in regular mode.

Try using /usr/sbin/sshd -D so it does not go to the background. Maybe it will print an error message then. Also, strace -ff -o sshd_trace.txt /usr/sbin/sshd may help you debug what the process is doing and why it doesn't seem to start. See the sshd_trace.txt.* after you run that.
