Two things to try - connect your keyboard to another machine and see if the spacebar works there, and connect a different keyboard to your machine to see if it works. Another thing you could try is run xev and see if there is any response when you hit your spacebar.

Sounds like your spacebar might be messed up hardware wise. Try taking it in to somebody who knows notebook keyboards and seeing if they'll check it out for free. Other than that I can't think of anything. Not really a notebook person. Sorry.
