Sound Works CD's Nothing Else

I have to ask this question as dumb as it sounds, I'm losing my mind here for my buddies laptop.

If I can get sound out of the computer playing a CD, but I cannot get any audio, system beeps, etc. is there something wrong with my installation or what?

It's that yamaha opl3sa2 I've tried slack 9, 10, 10.1 and 10.2 I don't get it. I've recompiled kernels.

But it's working in windows. I threw vector on it and same thing.

So I guess my question is, do CD's require the sound system?

I dont have yamaha card but if you open a terminal and run commands
su
alsaconf
alsamixer
then depending on if you use KDE I like kmix to check my settings.

System beeps is a combination of kmix or alsamixer..and raising the volume to the pc speaker.....also have a look at pcm level.

You will notice there is a listing for cds as well

2) playing a mp3 audio could also be a software issue....I like amarok sound player so what mulitmedia players you have....mplayer also is good

Wow! I finally got this working!

For some reason alsa couldnt find the audio.

so i did 'modprobe.....' and keyed in all the values I found in my mobo and it took.

then just added them to my modules for load time, we got it finally, we got it after 2 months LOL.
