Sound not working in Slack12

Hi, My sound card driver is installed and configured, its kernel module is loaded and active on boot, and the chipset seems to be detected. Sound USED to work and all of a sudden I boot and no sound. This is after a xorg.conf modification but all i did was change HSync for monitor so yeah has nothing at all to do with that. now when i built my computer i did choose a mobo with onboard sound so techinically i have two sound cards and when i go into alsamixer it shows the onboard realtek 6 channel sound instead of my sound card as the device. I run alsaconf like 20 times and specified the other sound card but i think i need to do these two things which i do not know how to do (this is my first Linux install, just last week, and i must say slack > xp):
1)specify sound card not onboard as default sound
and/or
2)disable onboard sound card

i cannot locate the kernel module for the onboard sound card (checked in (sorry for 'something' lol) /something/rc.d/rcmodules or something like that) and didnt find sound modules. once i do how do i UNLOAD modules from teh kernel? i know modprobe loads them

and please don't suggest that i use onboard i really want to use this sound card as i have a 7.1 setup

If you don't use the onboard sound card, you can just disable it in the BIOS and all should go fine.

wow im dumb

thanks

since the module for onboard is loaded, then wil it try to use that even though it is not present anymore or will it automatically switch to the sound card??

The hardware is scanned during the kernel boot. So if you disable your onboard soundcard, the kernel will not see it during the boot and therefore will not make any attempt to load the module handling it. Then, ALSA should be able to spot your actual soundcard and use it appropriately. Maybe you will have to tweak a bit the alsamix parameters too. But it will be working if the soundcard module is properly loaded and ALSA sees it.

have you tried toggling the controls in alsamixer with the M key ("MM" means off and "00" means on)
