Sound driver "Access denied"

I had sound configured perfectly a while ago, and the speakers work; but now, when I load, I get "cannot access sound driver in /dev/<something>, switching to null sound device (paraphrase)" and the speakers don't work; I get the feeling this is an issue with permissions (i.e. my normal account cannot access the sound drivers) so how do I change the permissions and/or fix this some other way"

Permissions on /dev/dsp:
Code:
$ ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 2008-11-04 19:33 /dev/dsp
Make sure your user is in the audio group (check the output of `id`). If not, add it to the audio group as follows:
Code:
# gpasswd -a user audio
You may, of course, have a different problem, so that is just the easy solution if that is indeed the problem.

Okay, I did that; I'm guessing I'll have to reboot for the changes to take effect?
Last reboot, it apparently didn't even try to run the driver for the user I normally run as (i.e. just went for the null device without giving me a warning) and rebooting should fix that?

I think you probably just have to log out and back in, but a full reboot would be foolproof. If that doesn't work, post the ouput of `cat /etc/group` and `dmesg` (and maybe `lspci -vv`).
