sorry ! jsdk rpm problems and slack noob issues

i apologise because i have trawled through enough posts for this problem but its causing me probs so here i go. . .

i now have slackware 9.1 (oh my god, im hooked - and what a perfect installation program, does it need to get better than this - its as easy as windows ! ).

I downladed the j2sdk rpm.bin

copied it to /usr, and as root
Code:
chmod a+x j2sdk. . .etc-rpm.bin
Then i tried via console
Code:
./j2sdk. . .etc-rpm.bin
which gives me this, as does the rpm GUI.

glibc >= 2.1.2-11 is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs
sh-utils >= 2.0-1 is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs
fileutils >= 4.0-8 is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs
gawk >= 3.0.4-1 is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs
textutils >= 2.0-2 is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs
/bin/sh is needed by j2sdk-1.4.2_03-fcs

Other things i would like to know are
- when i log in as root there is a starthere text file on desktop, when i clicked it it gave me a malformed url error . . it wasn't there after the first few boots

-i was using red hat before and it always seemed i could use gEdit but now its not always on my path, even as root. I have the same problem with KWrite.

-when i boot into gnome i cant find the text adventures i was promisied (id do a search but i don't know any names)

any help much appreciated
thanks

The rpm system in slack doesn't have a list of installed programs... So you'll always get those errors trying to install any sort of rpm with dependency checking, regardless of whether you have the packages or not.

Grab the slackpack listed above and use a simple
installpkg <whatever>.tgz

There you go :-D

There's also the rpm2tgz command which will convert an rpm into a slackpack .tgz to be used with slackware's package manager, pkgtool.

I am a fan of swaret ... configured the config file to point to a mirror nice and close and then ....

swaret --install j2sdk .... did the trick

To get java support in the new Mozilla Firefox browser I just remembered to ....
ln -s /usr/lib/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

Nice and easy.

I don't use Gnome so I'm not sure at all about the starthere file or your "text adventure" thing.

But you might try running gedit (note the all lowercase spelling).

You must make sure you've installed the necessary gnome packages to get gedit running though.

firstly thanks for the package advice - i got the paths set and its all up and running for all users. also i now understand the gedit problem, i put it in the path for all users.

The 'start here file' occured in KDE and it put the same file in /root. Do you think this is a bug or something ?

As for text adventures i am talking about interactive fiction. During the install process it mentioned that they would be installed for the gnome desktop. But never mind i am sure i will locate them at some point.

Thanks for all the help
