If all you did was burn a DVD, it shouldn't matter whether the OS doing the burning is in a VM or not.

I can't imagine how the "virtual world" would have ended up on the DVD. Really, a DVD is just like any other storage device, it just holds data. And the state of the OS used to write that data shouldn't have any impact on it. Maybe I'm completely misunderstanding what you're seeing or trying to do, so how about backing up a bit and and giving the explanation another go.
By the way, getting VMWare to work on Slackware is possible, but after comparing it to VirtualBox, I've found VirtualBox to be a lot easier to get running and keep running than VMWare. Part of that was that I was using VMWare Server, and VMWare really doesn't care about supporting that version so kernel upgrades kept breaking my network connectivity. That doesn't happen with VirtualBox.
