vmware - lots of questions!!! well only 2

hi...i got vmware on ubuntu...thought id try gentoo on it...
i installed everything...but there was a kernel panic...so i need to reconfigure my kernel..i thought id do it with a live CD but i cant seem to get it to boot from the disk...? how do you do that?

secondly, whats a good website to learn all this stuff about vmware from? most of what i got was from forums - takes a while to sift through em sometimes.

thank you ...and i have vmware-workstation 5.5.1 and ubuntu 6.06

With vmware, when you start up your gentoo install, look at the first few messages that comes up, one of them will tell you how to change your bios settings. Don't worry that you'll mess your computer, it will only change it for that Virtual Computer. Change the boot order to cd. It's been a while since I had vmware properly installed on a system so I am running from memory here. But that should do it.
