I have a AMD k62 400 processor and 92 megs of ram and she is slow. I am running slackware 10.0 and it runs faster than anything that I have put on it. It still is a little slow, is it the RAM that is holding my back or is it just my processing speed.
I'm running KDE just because I like it better. I tried fluxbox and it does work faster but mozilla still runs choppy.
I use XFCE, even on my desktop which has more than enough muscle to run KDE/Gnome. It's faster, and more responsive.
Other than that, yeah, I'd say that your problem is caused by lack of RAM. That thing takes PC100? You can get that dirt cheap, especially if you buy second-hand. I'd suggest you call around your local trailing edge-type computer stores. Even if it recommends PC133, you can put PC100 in there. In your RAM range, an increase from 92mb (actually 96mb with 4mb shared, no?) of PC133 to 256mb of PC100 will produce a significant performance improvement. It's not until you get into the range where you don't need swap for regular use that you see a hit from slower memory, and for most of us, that's in the >512mb range.
I believe that I have XFCE intalled so I'll try that. I also kind of like Fluxbox but I Have no idea how customize it. Are there any help files for it?
I'll also try swapping out some RAM from my athlon system. I believe the ram works in both.
You mean you want to add themes or just change the menu? If you wanna change the menu its in like /usr/X11R6/share/fluxbox/menu. As well there is other files in there that you can edit. Also a styles directory where I assume you add new themes and such.
I really like fluxbox myself. You can learn everything you need to know about it by reading the documentation on their website http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/
...is where you can edit the menu. It's pretty straightforward.
92MB ram is a little skimpy to be running KDE. I think KDE lists its requirements at 128. Bump up the ram and you'll likely see less swap usage, which = much faster experience.
