I install slackware 10.1 to a friend, it's a fresh install well when we login to KDE, and try to open some CD slackware just hang up, freezes it doesn't work the mouse or keyboard don't work nothing and I have no idea what could be happening.
Sorry, what I mean when I say try to open some CD, is when I try to run any music CD or Data CD, whatever slackware hangs up and don't work anymore. the keyboard too stop to work and the mouse, I try to run the CD from a CD Device icon that I put in the Desktop to my friend. So she don't have to open a konsole, mount the stuff and try to manage it there, she is very newbie in Linux so make this feel more windows to her it's the best way.
No the keyboard stop to work when this happend, everything stop to work. So I decide to reboot slack with no X server running, and try to mount the CD in the black mode screen, it give me a big error message. And at the end I copy this:
<0> kernel panic: fatal exception in interrupt
in interrupt handler - not syncing
the same error was showing when I was trying to install it, I fixed it with ide=nodma but now its not working anymore.
ah...you ve got to add smth. to your lilo.conf file.
add a line that says " append="ide=nodma"
like this :
-----------
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image =
root =
label =
append="ide=nodma"
read-only # Non-UMSDOS filesystems should be mounted read-only for checking
# Linux bootable partition config ends
-----------
then save the file, and run " lilo " ( all done as root ).
i guess that will work, but it will also disable dma for your HD.
so try the line : " append="hdc=nodma"
( for "hdc" fill in your cd-device , could be hdb or hdd )
Great idea egag I think as you that it will work. Let me try out and see what happend, if it doesnt work guess I would have to compile a new kernel or maybe create some initrd image.
this has nothing to do with an initrd image; you only need that
to load modules before you mount the HD.
normally you compile all you need to read from the HD into the kernel.
i think it has to do with the drive .
do you have the drive spec.'s and the mobo ?
Hi, well I modify lilo.conf just to see if the cdrom drive work well, and when I reboot to tested it lilo didn't show anything more than error message of numbers like this:
9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9
So I have to enter in safe mode with slack rescue disk and edit lilo.conf again and put it back as it was, so I did get to login again to slack, but my friend told me she don't want any system that doesn't let her play any compact disk so I just delete slack off (believe me it hurt to me more than anything, cause I love Slack ) and I put her Knoppix which is working great until now. She had an IBM box, and I still don't know why slack didn't recognize her cdrom device, but at least she is now happy with Knoppix another one join the linux world.
