Smile Slackware

I finally installed Slackware Only took me about 3 reinstalls to do it too

Now I just have a few more questions:

1. It was 3am in the morning, and I accidently did something to my Windows partition (hda1). I caught it a few seconds after and stopped. Windows wont boot up (saying its missing a file) but I used Knoppix and it looks like all my files are still there.

I think I change the filesystem from FAT32 to a linux filesystem (82). Because SlackWare kept trying to get me to install Slackware on hda1. If I just change it back to FAT32 do you think it'll work?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Knoppix and Mandrake both set up my Internet for me, Slackware doesn't

Do you think that:

A. The kernel doesn't support my network card.
or
B. I just have to set it up manually.

I logged into root but couldn't find any programs that let me change my Internet settings. I'm using KDE as my WM for now, but if you read my last post I want to use Fluxbox

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heh, I found fdisk easier to use then cfdisk. With cfdisk I could only add 1 partition, and I needed 2. One for swap and one for Linux.

Also, with Knoppix it only shows hda1 and hdb1 on my desktop, shouldn't it show hdb2 (linux swap) too?

Thanks.

Ok I fixed #1 I just had to change the FS back to Fat32

Another question:

Lilo doesn't seem to be booting, I see this when I turn on my computer:

PXE-E53: No boot filename received

I can boot off the Slackware CD for now (not too much trouble), because I guess the Kernel is on the CD.

you have to setup your card manually, you probaly have to compile a kernel wit the appropriate module

Can you.. err... post your /etc/fstab file and your /etc/lilo.conf file?

-zsejk

P.S.: since this is one mega-thread on all your issues... ... what is the brand and model of your network card? and how do you connect to internet? dial-up? DSL? cable?

Exclamation

The message:

PXE-E53: No boot filename received

is comming from your computer's BIOS!

Normally, it must be deactivated in the BIOS setting somewhere...

PXE is a method of booting a system from a network. So I don't think you want this!

And if you don't have any more message, it's because you don't have a MBR (Master Boot Record) written on your hard drive (hda1)...

If you want to correct Windows, use (from a Windows diskette) "fdisk /mbr" to restore the Windows MBR, then when you power up your computer, it automatically starts Windows...

Afterward, you must check your /etc/lilo.conf in Slackware, using an editor, and be sure to include:
other=/dev/hda1
label=WindowsXP

at the end of the /etc/lilo.conf file...
This will add the Windows boot option for lilo.

From within a terminal (always under ROOT), you must run "lilo" for it to install the Linux BootLoader... (NB: It must return you a message that didn't show any error)

FOR THE SWAP PARTITION not appearing on the desktop, it's normal... You musn't use this partition, It's reserved for Linux Kernel...!!!

AND the last: INTERNET SETUP:
Check the Slackware Book on the www.slackware.com site... I've done my configuration from this help at my first installation and worked great...!

Happy Learning!... Your best bet: Slackware!
