slackware 9.1 w/ nforce2: problems

Newbie here...

I know this issue has been addressed over and over again, but I can't seem to find the answer that I'm looking for.

I have an nforce2 mobo. The ethernet works fine. I'm not sure about USB, but I'm not concerned with it at the moment. Audio, on the other hand, doesn't work. I'm trying to get the nvaudio module to work. I've edited my /etc/modules.conf (which was empty...is it supposed to be by default?) with a few alias lines which were mentioned in the release notes that came with the NVidia tar.gz. I tried to manually load the nvaudio.o module using 'modprobe nvaudio' which was my understanding of what the release notes told me to do. I get the following message:

/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/nvaudio.o: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/nvaudio.o: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect modules parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/nvaudio.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/nvaudio.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/nvaudio.o: insmod nvaudio failed

I know the previous message is a bit wordy, but I hope it helps!

Thanks for any info folks...

dont use the nvaudio modules. here is a link from the alsa project that describes how to install and set up nforce onboard sound: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...odule=intel8x0 for a quick solution you could try this, if alsa is already installed.
Code:
modprobe snd-intel8x0
Then type this to set the default volume levels.
Code:
alsamixer
you should issue both commands as root.

Hope that helped.

Thanks Trollman,

I tried the quick solution and it worked. alsamixer says nforce 2 at the top of the screen. Should it say intel8x0 or something like that for me to be using the intel driver? Sound works in KDE, but it's incredibly choppy and garbled. I'm not really sure which driver it's using now, and I'm too new to know what's going on. Do you know what's wrong?

what are you using to test the sound? if you using xmms, try turning down the volume on the play to something around 88% and it will sound better. If its kde sounds, you could also turn down the sound just a little in the sound panel.

I was using the default mpg player in KDE, whatever that is. I'd have to check the next time I use my linux box. I'll try turning the volume down and see what happens...

Thanks
Ryan
