Slackware 13.37: Problem with wireless and kernel 2.6.38.4

Hello everyone,

I am with the Slackware 13.37 installed, but I had trouble with the Wireless.

I have a HP Pavilion notebook series DV-5000, the wireless card is a Ralink, RT3090 chip.

The problem: Sometimes after boot, there is no wireless network found, even though they are all ok: rt2860sta module loaded wlan0 interface created, but the command "iwlist scan" does not return any results.

After dropping the interface "ifconfig wlan0 down", download the kernel module "modprobe-r rt2860sta" and reload the module and lift the interface, the wireless back to normal.

The same problem occurs if I use the new module, the rt2800pci.

I installed the 2.6.38.4 kernel in the folder "/ testing" thinking it might be a problem for version 2.6.37, but it is not.

Does anyone have any idea what can be?

Thanks

PS: To update the kernel to version 2.6.38.4, you should also update libdrm packages and table or not needed?

I did a Google search and unfortunately you aren't alone. Other distributions have trouble with this wireless card as well. Apparently the wireless card is one of those that may or may not work with the open source kernel driver module.

Try using this command at start up (or add it to your rc.local startup script) and maybe it might work:

modprobe rt3090sta

There is also a Proprietary driver from RaLink's website for download as well. You may have better luck with it.

The curiosity is that the Slackware 13.1 work normally. In Linux Mint and Ubuntu 10 to 10.10 as well.

The module Rt3090sta is an alias for the module rt2860sta.

Apparently it can be a problem in module hp_wmi:
