slack10 install woes

Ok this might be a semi-long thread but here goes.

Im installing slack on a Sony VAIO laptop w/ 6gb HD, 64mb ram, oh and its a pII 333.

I can install slack just fine (though its a slow process), what im asking is the best partition scheme for a 6gb drive (standalone not dual booted).

On numerous attempts after startx I choose gnome for my default it dies on the initial gnome screen. If I do xwmconfig I can run blackbox, flux and so forth (no apparent errors there yet) i choose the xfce desktop and the machine hard locked, similar to statring gnome.

So will my machine handle slack? if so whats the best way to set up my laptop ? 128mb swap? Ive ran slack 9.1 on it and it runs fine.

Oh and "Shilo" great articles theve helped me and taught me a bunch!

Regards...

Why do you not use fluxbox, you will ablle to run gnome apps with it and I think it is good optimized for your hardware.

As far as performance, with that small of a drive, you would be fine with a root (/) partition, and a swap partition...a 6 GB hard drive doesn't have 1024 cyllindars, so you don't need a /boot partition. If you wanted, you could create a partition for /home in order to reuse it if you reload or to keep it from getting out of hand in size, but that's all up to you.

Edit: Almost forgot...128 MB is the recommended size of the swap partition (twice the size of your RAM)

Also, check your x configuration. If you have things at the wrong values it won't work properly. That may be why the system locks, you could have it set to things that it can't handle. So, double and triple check. If it still doesn't work at least you know it isn't your configuration...

Thanks all Ill start to look into it a little deeper!!

so is this right for partition?

root = 3000gb (primary)
/home = 3000gb (primary or extended?)
swap = 128mb (though usually its 400mb or so) (primary, or logical?)

You can set all in primary with a 3 partition set, I would set 4gb to /root and 2gb to /home personally.
