Slack newb Question about Mplayer

I wanted to try mplayer instead of xine with slack 91. I started by removing xineui and xine using the KPackage manager. I then downloaded the following packages from www.linuxpackages.net ...
Code:
lame-3.93.1-i486-1as.tgz
mplayer-1.0pre2-runtime-1as.tgz
xvid-0.9.2-i486-1as.tgz
I installed the lame and xvid packages first using the KPackage tool as mplayer instructions at the download site said "Compiled against lame and xvid from this site." I then installed the mplayer package and rebooted.

Here's what I get when I try to run mplayer from Konsole window...
Code:
mplayer: error while loading shared libraries:
libcdda_interface.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So I then downloaded the libcdda_interface.so.0: but I don't know where to put it or even if I screwed something else up . Am I barking up the wrong tree? Is this going to be an endless string of missing libraries?

Please help me through my growing pains. Thanks, olias

I are those slackware precompiled bainaries? I would recomend going to the mplayer home page and downloading the source file and compiling it yourself. It was a pretty painless compile. The little bit of pain were dumb mistakes I mad. It was my first succesful compilation, give it a try.

Alright, it sounds as if you do not have the cdparanoia package installed. If you pop in your slackware 9.1 disc 1, mount the cd, and browse to slackware/ap you want to install the cdparanoia-IIIalpha9.8.tgz and that should fulfill that dependency. I'm not sure how you did your install, so I cannot say why that package was not installed.

Anyway, I am curious why you removed the xine packages? Is it a space issue? Mplayer and Xine can co-exist without a problem.

While compiling Mplayer from the sources can be pretty basic, if you want all the support you are in form a bit of an adventure gathering all the libraries and codecs. You will need to follow the directions on Mplayer's site very closely.

Thanks shanenin, I did as you suggested and it works! I still haven't got the gui working yet (gmplayer).

Also, thanks danns for the information. I didn't know if xine could co-exist and I didn't see any reason for having 2 programs that do basically the same thing.
