slack 9.1 how many rams uses with kde


i was just wondering how come my slackware 9.1 is little faster than the windows xp
how many rams does slackware 9.1 needs ?
i have 256 mb

In a console, run "free".
If running kde, go to the main menu / System / Info Center / Memory.

256MB seems to be enough for KDE with a couple of apps open and no use of swap space. The "top" command will show what's going on.
Just wait for the 2.6.0 kernel, KDE will feel noticably faster.

About RAM i`ve got 512 and after 1 hour free ram = 8mb

this is what am talking about it s taking all my rams and taking about 64 of the swap
is that normal?

lets say you have 200 mb of ram any you run prog. A that needs 190 mb of ram after you close it kernel does not free all 190 mb of ram in case you run the application again but that does not mean that u have lot of garbage in your memory when an application need ram kernel allocates these ram to the application. thats why you have 8 mb ram after an hour
