Well, again, you're stuck with the vesa driver, once you change this you'll most likely support more resolutions.

I believe the shutdown options etc. are only available in runlevel 4 (which is what you wanted anyway if you don't want to type startx). You may also have to add yourself to the power group (but I'm not positive since I use runlevel 3 and just shutdown manually).

To elaborate on what trickykid said, to boot into runlevel 4, just change

id:3:initdefault:
in /etc/inittab to

# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

For nvidia drivers, I always use nvidia-xconfig and it has worked perfect so far. Even my mouse buttons work.
