session manager will not start

Hello

since I upgraded my kde packages from the packages on the 10.2 disc2 my session manager dosn't work.It states starting session manager and then just hangs. with a little clock in the center of a black screen presenting me with no logon prompt.

I have thus gone back to using run level 3 but it would be nice to have the option of using level 3 or 4.

1st how do I ascertain which session manger my system is configured to use.. KDM,GDM..

...and of course any ideas on fixing would be great too.

p.s just to be clear.

if i drop down to run level 3 and type startx everything starts up ok

rgds..

I just checked my /etc/rc.d/rc.4 script. I don't have one for rc.5 so I don't know about that one. The script checks for session managers in this orer: GDM, KDM, XDM. It has a "sleep 30" line at the end so after 30 seconds it should do something, command prompt login probably.

10.2 doesn't come with Gnome so unless you've installed it there won't be a GDM. KDM is supposed to be in /opt/kde/bin. And XDM is in /usr/X11R6/bin. Maybe try reinstalling the kdebase package. I think that's the one that provides kdm.

It could be that your KDM and/or XDM are damaged or missing. Check those paths for the files. Using runlevel 3 and startx bypasses the session managers.

hmm..

this problem may have been of my own making.

i have made serveral unsusseful attempts to install gnome until I finally convinced myself that KDE is not that bad.
And if Patrick hasn't geared slack 4 it then i'm not gonna try and shoe horn it in.

So the /usr/bin/gdm file and the files that the gdm script point to( i.e gdm-start )are still on my system?!??

Anyway I have commented out the reference to gdm from rc.4,so thank you very much for your pointer.

kdm as the next default in the script starts up ok.

cheers
