Screwed filesystem on sd card in PCMCIA

My computer froze with an sd card in an adapter in the PCMCIA slot and when it restarted some of the folders have scrambled files (like those when an image is copied to the disk). I cannot delete them or move them and now the card will not mount - too many file systems mounted; wrong fs etc etc - . Curiously it will mount in a usb adapter and display the files. Can anyone please tell me how to format it and clear up the mess?

you can use fdisk to delete the partition and repartition it.
or

if you do not wish to delete the partition and create a new partition,

you can just use mkfs.msdos -F 32 /dev/sda1 ( I assume it is /dev/sda1)

edited: corrected mkfs.dos to mkfs.msdos

mkfs.msdos worked a treat. Thanks.
