Question Screen power off doesn't power off GPU

Why does executing
Code:
xset -display :0 dpms force off
not power off my GPU? I know it's still running because I log its temperature with `sensors`.

I'm using an Nvidia GK208B [GeForce GT 710] with Nouveau 1.0.16 on slackware-current.

I think because the dpms parameters involve power saving for the monitor only, not the gpu, that's how dpms works.

power management for nouveau has still a long way to go...

Let's see the bright side there: because of Nouveau's issues with the power management, the video card is always on full power saving mode.

Also, what is the chipset of my GK208B [GeForce GT 710] so I can use this table to figure out what sort of PM it supports. thanks

if you click on the chipset names at the top of that table they send you to this page.
googling GK208B chipset says your card is using the Kepler architecture, so I suppose the answer is NVE0.

Thanks.
So why don't I have a /sys/kernel/debug/dri/*/pstate ?

probably because your hardware, according to the table linked above, doesn't seem to support it.

How do I test the power state of an Nvidia card when using Nvidia's proprietary drivers?

Nvidia's proprietary driver supports both Suspend and Hibernate via "kernel driver callback". I don't know much more than that because I'm always set for maximum performance. There is a fairly decent monitor built right into the "nvidia-sdettings" app for finer tuning and some stats information.
