Screen brightness reduced on starting X

I'm running slackware 10.2 with kernel 2.6.16.1, i set up my screen resolution to be 1024x768x256 in lilo.
I've been facing two problems after that
1. The tux logo does not appear properly (really bad resolution ) during boot
2. whenever i start X, the terminal brightness reduces drastically, and that gets fixed upon quitting from X

In the terminal try running...

Code:
xgamma -gamma 1.8
Adjust the gamma number to your preference.

Try a different resolution setting in LILO. Maybe that will help.
