I changed my fstab to say sda and lilo's section for the root for the 2.6 kernel to sda
however it still would not boot and of course i had to use a live CD to change back so i could boot into 2.4
no in looking at lilo there is the boot = /dev/hda2
I assume that since in my haste i never changed this line that that just MIGHT be my main problem?

As I said before you have to rename ALL mentions of hdaX to sdaX. In other words:

hda -> sda
hda1 -> sda1

get the picture? Do this in your fstab as well as in your lilo conf.

Boot block is the most important part here. However, you can leave hda for 2.4 kernel.

trying to change the boot = /dev/hda2 to
boot = /dev/sda2
in the lilo.conf
when I try to run lilo after i save it of course tells me that it cannot find /dev/sda2
I have to make all of these changes in 2.4 kernel but the 2.4 kernel does not see the device as an sda.
all paritions have been changed in fstab and upon reboot it still errors out with a kernel panic

Pass the parameter root=/dev/sda2 at boot. Edit fstab.

For those looking for the sk98lin driver source who don't wish to recompile the kernel to include it, you can download it from this link ==> SK98LIN

That is the 3Com driver downloads web site. It's the first driver listed on that page. Use Installation Mode, not Kernel Patch mode when installing. This has worked fine for me on an old Debian and on Slackware 10.2 with the 2.4.31 kernel.

When I compiled 2.6, however, I turned sk98lin on in the config, obviating the need to separately install it.
