samba/swat: can't connect to "http://localhost:901/"

hi all,

I'm really looking for an idiot's guide to samba.

At work we have a small winblow$ workgroup.. (I, the lone linux geek) so I'm trying to configure samba so I can see & be seen from linux on my lappy (#2 in the sig) slackware-11 of course

I know nothing about networking. I have been reading the official samba site's docs and getting somewhere (?)

Code:
$ ps -A | grep smbd
 1736 ?        00:00:00 smbd
 1745 ?        00:00:00 smbd
$ cat /etc/services /etc/inetd.conf | grep swat
swat 901/tcp # samba web configuration tool
swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat
which seems correct...

then I open firefox and go to "http://localhost:901/" to try and configure samba but I keep getting unable to connect.

any help here? is there another way (besides samba) to 'join' the M$ club here?

i've tried searching LQ for samba stuff but seems everything is over my head..

tia

As far as SWAT goes, have a look at http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/...AT.html#xinetd. Basically, you need to edit /etc/inetd.conf and re-start inetd.

Have you had a look at The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide and Samba-3 by Example? They're both quite good.

Swat uses the "hosts allow" setting in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file for security. It should be set similar to this:

Quote:
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
Where "192.168.1." would be your local network and "127." is the localhost network. If you don't include "127." in "hosts allow", then localhost can't access Swat.

i have, is this correct?
Quote:
$ cat /etc/services /etc/inetd.conf | grep swat
swat 901/tcp # samba web configuration tool
swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/swat swat
i actually didnt change anything on those lines. they are stock slackware. and of course, I have multiple tabs open to the official samba documentation. but like I said...idiot's guide

@centauricw- I have added the correct host now to smb.conf, now I see in
Code:
ls /var/log/samba*
all the computers in our MS workgroup. but I still can't log into swat.

I am truly and idiot

sorry for wasting everyone's time.. i finally did a:
ps -A | grep inetd

followed by:

ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc.inet*

which showed me two things.. inetd was not running, and it was not set executable... gee I wonder why I couldn't connect to swat?

thanks for the replies and help..
