S;aclware 12.2 Printer set up

I've noticed the installer hang on Gutenprint and fc-cache as others but the system installed just fine. However, I went to set up my printer using the KDE set-up program as I always do and the very printer selection that I need (Lp0) is grayed out and only network options are available.

Is this a bug? I am using cups as my print server.

Is your cups server daemon running? The output of 'ps ax | grep cupsd' should show /usr/sbin/cupsd.
It is possible that /etc/rc.d/rc.cups is not executable, so when you boot your cups server daemon is not being started.

The gutenprint install/upgrade will finish if you let it. Did you let it finish?

I find that setting up CUPS is most reliable when doing it in a web browser. Try localhost:631

Nothing working as of yet

Shadow,

I merely stated that I noticed the slow down when the installer got to gutenprint...I let the installer go on its merry way.

My CL output shows that cups is running as I configured it to start during the installation configuration. Still, it will not let me choose the local printer...the option is grayed out like it does not exist. Attemps at using the web administration configuration yielded no results. The local printer is not being recognized.

Me thinks there is a bug un here somewhere. Slackware 12.1 was working fine last night...

Just an idea: check that /dev/lp0 is 664 and owned by root:lp.

Perhaps you have overwritten your old /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file during the install. If you backed up your /etc directory prior to the upgrade (as suggested), then you could compare the old with the new. Otherwise you could reinstall the printer from scratch.

Still nothing

I did a clean install so there was no chance of anything being overwritten. This is a clean installation as of this afternoon. According to what I am seeing, /dev/lp0 doesn't even seem to exist so I cannot change any permissions on it at present.

Bug...bug...bug...

How is this printer connected? Parallel port, usb, ethernet?

Short term solution:

As root type at a command line:
/sbin/modprobe -q parport_pc
/sbin/modprobe -q lp

Long term solution:

As root open /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
Search for the same commands listed above.
Remove the Comment hash mark.
Save the file.

The rc.d modules file was uncommented for both of those lines. They did have 2>null after them though

The '2>null' merely redirects any error output from the commands to the null device (aka bit bucket) so that they are not seen or recorded.

What is the output of 'lsmod | grep parport'? This will show if the kernel module has been loaded.
Do you have the appropriate kernel modules installed? i.e. Is there a /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-smp/kernel/drivers/parport/parport_pc.ko file?

As far as I know ALL modules are being loaded. As a check and balance I installed Kubuntu 8.04.1 on the same machine (since it did not take long) and the port was found just fine. As hard as it is to say this looks like a problem with Slackware not my hardware. I did everything as I normally do. There is no reason for the modules not to be loaded.

It's simply a Slackware bug...

I'm sure you've done this already as you were previously running Slackware 12.1. Does your regular user have permission to use your printer (plugdev)? Does /etc/group look okay to you?

Try adding your user account to the lp group.
