Question Runlevel 4- blank screen with text cursor, can't type anything

I edited the inittab file to boot right into runlevel 4, but all I see is a text cursor at the very upper left corner of my screen and I can't type anything.

What gives? Where is my GUI desktop?

Sorry, I'm new to this and it's my second machine installing Slackware on.

Prior to editing the /etc/inittab file, did you try using 'startx' to start the X window system?
You should not make the change to /etc/inittab until you have tested your setup.

It is likely that you need to configure the Xserver to suit your setup.
To help you, further information is needed. Please post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Alright, well, I didn't know about the startx command. The problem is, I'm stuck because trying to go back in to edit the file again would just lead me back to the faulty runlevel 4 screen. I think I'll just re-install it for the 3rd time(!) and give it a try.

This is perplexing because on the last machine I installed Slackware on, I had no problems with accessing the KDE desktop right after setup and installation.

Dual-booting Slackware 13.37 with Windows 7 on a desktop, i5 2500k processor, Asus Radeon EAH6850 video card, I partitioned 900 gigs of space for W7 and about 100 for Slackware. (1tb harddrive), mobo is Asus P8P67 EVO.

Am checking out /var/long/Xorg.0.log right now, will post again soon....

You can edit inittab back to runlevel 3 by doing:
ctrl alt f6
login as root
telinit 3
nano /etc/inittab

In the future, please use

tags around log files like that.

So, it seems you are using an HD6800, or something quite similar. I don't believe support for those GPUs entered the kernel till late in the 2.6.* cycle, and a lot of fixes for them went into the 3.0.* kernels. Your kernel command line doesn't disable KMS, and yet Xorg isn't detecting KMS from the kernel, so the kernel you are using almost certainly doesn't support your GPU in the radeon DRM driver. You will either want to upgrade your kernel, or use the proprietary driver from AMD. In the mean time, if you run 'Xorg -configure' and then edit the xorg.conf file that is generated, switching the driver from 'radeon' to 'vesa', you should at least be able to get into X.

EDIT:

According to http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature you need at least 2.6.38, though due to the number of bug fixes, I would recommend a 3.0.* kernel.

Adam

Ah, okay. How would I go about to upgrading my kernel? Does it have something to do with the kernel parameters setup asks for in the beginning?

Here's how to update your kernel in several easy to follow steps (trust me it's very easy). Edited and resourced from AlienBob's website:

1. Download kernel source 3.0.4 to your /usr/src directory and unpack it using command "tar -xzvf linux-3.0.4.tar.gz". I recommend downloading the gzipped tarball (tar.gz) to match this argument. Since the kernel.org site is down this may require some Googling.

2. Open a Console in /usr/src/ and type in this command: "rm linux" to remove the symlink to the old sources.

3. Run this command: "cp /boot/kernel-huge-config /usr/src/linux-3.0.4/.config"

4. Run this command: "cd linux-3.0.4" to change to the kernel source directory.

5. Run this command: "make xconfig" to open the GUI kernel configuration editor and use the import tool to open the /usr/src/linux-3.0.4/.config file. You may have to enable view hidden files in your file manager. If there are any extra drivers you may need thumb through the kernel sources and enable modules you think you'll need. Usually the huge kernel will have everything probable.

6. Run this command: "make bzImage modules" to built the kernel, modules, and firmware. This is going to take a while. I advise you to go find something to do that's productive.

7. Run this command: "make modules_install" to install the modules and firmware to the /lib/modules directory.

8. Run these commands:

"cp arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.4"
"cp System.map /boot/System.map-3.0.4"
"cp .config /boot/config-3.0.4"

This will copy everything needed to the /boot directory

9. Now run these commands to clean up your kernel sources and prep them for daily usage.

"make clean"
"make mrproper"

10. Now run "cd .." to change directory to /usr/src.

11. Run command: "ln -s linux-3.0.4 linux" to create a symlink to your new kernel sources.

12. Run this command: "cd /boot" to change to the /boot directory.

13. Run these commands:

"rm vmlinuz"
"rm System.map"

To remove the old kernel symlinks as needed.

14. Run these commands:

"ln -s vmlinuz-3.0.4 vmlinuz"
"ln -s System.map-3.0.4 System.map"

15. Now run this command from any console: "lilo"

And if you get no errors you are ready to reboot and enjoy the new kernel.

You may at some point will want to remove the packages for the old kernel. Whatever you do, do not uninstall the kernel-headers package. This is not part of the kernel, but more is a header toolkit for glib. As long as glib isn't replaced these never need updating.

Note: After removing the old kernel, firmware, modules, and source packages you may have to recreate most of the new symlinks of packages like the /usr/src/linux directory, System.map, and vmlinuz image files in /boot.

15 easy steps and no headaches. Enjoy.

I don't know how to make symlinks to any of those files/directories... is it necessary when upgrading the kernel?

Symlinks are added in my instructions using the "ln -s (name of file/directory) (name of link)

Like this

ln -s /linux-3.0.4 linux

Just follow my instructions and you'll be fine. the command ln is the link tool and the -s flag is for symbolic links.

Hmmm ... How does one run `make xconfig` if one does not have X ?

You can use "menuconfig" instead of "xconfig" for a curses based configuration tool.

Sorry, but this case is very puzzling. At this point, I would have at least tried to blacklist the radeon module from loading in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, rebooted, and tried to re-run the xorgsetup and see if you can edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use the vesa driver at least.

There are ways to get X11 running even if minimally. The vesa driver should work on most, if not all video cards.

Also, I just remembered, updating just the kernel might not get that card working entirely. You may also need to rebuild the packages for libdrm and mesa to their latest versions.
