".run" File For ATI Drivers

So I'm trying to install Device Drivers for my Video Card, and I got the file from the official website (amd.com).

However, I don't know how to install the device drivers because it's in a ".run" file format. Does anybody know the command? When I double click it, vim opens it up so it's not executable.

Change the permissions to make it executable, then execute it. Usually they are shell scripts with a binary part embedded in them. Before installing the driver, switch off the X environment (boot in text mode is the preferred choice).

Check also the documentation from the AMD site: they suggest to launch the installer by running:
Code:
sh file.run
but the result is quite the same (it just skips the chmod step).

As colucix mentioned above... make sure the X server is not running.
You can just use "sh filename.run" without making it executable like this.

Code:
telinit 3
sh filename.run

Couldn't I just run it in a terminal? Do I have to switch to text mode?

No you can't upgrade the driver while X is running.

Yes. Or at least it is strongly advisable, otherwise you will install a software which is already in use and it can results in unpredictable behavior. What's the problem with that? mRgOBLIN suggested the simplest way using the telinit command.

For ati user ,try

Code:
ati-driver-installer-11-7-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg
and you will find

Code:
fglrx-8.872-x86-1.tgz
created in the same dir.

then try

Code:
installpkg fglrx-8.872-x86-1.tgz
and remember ,you should blacklist kernel driver before try fglrx.add:

Code:
blacklist radeon
to

Code:
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
