Good, we are RC3 now, but I would really like to see gtk 4.6.x in. Thanks to all who are working hard for that release to happen.
I agree , today i try compile and install shortwave (multimedia app to lisen radio via internet on graphic gui) , he wants libadwaita , and libadwaita say me...
Code:
Dependency gtk4 found: NO found 4.4.1 but need: '>= 4.5.0'

Please go up this gtk4.
Excuse me, but is this libadwaita included in Slackware (to be) 15.0? Nope?
Not that I'm against your request, BUT I remember that when Slackware 14.2 was released, the Qt5 was a thing and also there was the Plasma5. So, I'm quite certain that in the wild was applications depending on them.
YET, the Slackware 14.2 was released with KDE4 and Qt4.
What people did when they needed Qt5 on Slackware 14.2? They built it themselves or grabbed it from Mr. Hameleers' repository.
Just saying...

I am asking for gtk 4.6.x because I believe htat the next -current system will take long to become stable and we wont have a well prepared ground for the stuff like gnome and newer things ported to gtk 4.x. I tried yesterday the zrythm DAW complie and it fails miserably as it requires newer gtk 4 stuff. Gnome 42 and later newer versions with go also more and more with gtk 4 porting from what I see from
their pages https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/Initiatives/-/issues/26 .

I don't know when 15.1 or 16 will be released, I just hope it will be before 15 become so old that the most important software it contains can't be updated. I prefer not to be able to build a few very new software versions than not to be able to update a lot of software (shipped in Slackware or not), as is now the case with 14.2.
I just suppose, but looking back at the history the time frame between the releases is quite long, and that's good from my point of view, nothing wrong, except that the last one was way too long IMHO. Although I am using 14.2 right now still on my work laptop and everyday
computer due to its stability and gnome I have on it, I can not upgrade gnome on it to a more recent version as its base is too old in most of cases for that. And lots of new stuff came in. Anyway that's my problem, not anybody else.
But from the gnome point of view the releases are made every six months, and next release is scheduled for March, to be able to have
the latest stable release at that time it will be needed to update lots of packages already in slackware. Therefore the reason of why
trying to push the most recent stable stuff in the upcoming release.
Of course if this does not happen, I will be happy with it in either case.
Further, the GTK4 toolkit is not yet on par with GTK3 wrt accessibility, which matters for me. I am fine with GTK4-4.4.1 provided in Slackware 15, with most software still linked to GTK3.

Sorry for bumping this again (probably for the last time, haha), but since we are now in RC3 phase, I hope below small change can be applied to allow the "init" program to properly supervise the SDDM process when entering runlevel 4.
In my opinion, gtk4 is not used for anything "stable" in slackware at this moment. It's there for developers to test and experiment porting their software, so it makes sense to ship a development version. I would be glad if qt6 was included as well for the same reason, though with the licensing problems and the size of the toolkit I understand that it can be a very big deal.
