Being a -stable guy just explains why it took me months to comment the topic, period. Sorry, but the rest of your post is just pointless branding blah, far from my concern, which is more privacy-related. No need to be an enterprise, a scout association, a starship or what to find ESR is an easier horse.

If Pat doesn't add the ESR version to extra/, forum member ruario created a script that will download the Firefox binary from Mozilla and repackage it into a Slackware package. It supports ESR releases as well. You can either change FFESR=${FFESR:-N} in the script to Y, or you can pass it to the script as a variable. It will also optionally install/upgrade the resulting package if -i is passed to the script.

Code:
FFESR=Y sh ./latest-firefox.sh -i

Good grief! Is it that hard to understand that not everyone wants fast paced development? Many people enjoy a "set it and forget it" lifestyle without caring about "enterprise". A single application does not make Slackware "Enterprise" and while Slackware was including the ESR, it didn't make Slackware "Enterprise". Why does someone wanting Firefox ESR mean they want an Enterprise Linux?

Firefox development is fast. They started with v80 back in August and they're releasing 90 tomorrow. That's almost a release a month. It's even (slightly) faster than Chrome, who released 80 back in February 2020 and they're on 91 as of May 2021. Chrome is averaging 1.36 months between releases and Firefox is averaging 1.1.

Here's all the changes since v80 based on the release history on WikiPedia. It is quite the list and it should be understandable why some may not want to subject themselves to that much change that quickly. For some, they prefer all those changes to get the bugs worked out and things smoothed out until they update, which is precisely what ESR releases are for.

Right. To the letter, firefox RR should have nothing to do in -stable, where changes are meant to be only security-driven. According to its supersonic release schedule it even belongs more to testing/.

However, it's worth to be noticed, in case ESR would be back, that Slackware wouldn't then be the only distro/OS to provide both editions. This request don't aim to turn it into a totally new original concept.

Oh, did you noticed the pace of software development today?

Yeah, everything evolves very quickly.

I really hope that the longterm things will NEVER go back on Slackware - neither the Firefox for Enterprise or the Industrial Kernels.

And for you, Comrade NonNonBa, I have a suggestion: if your business really need Firefox for Enterprise, do what I did myself over 4 (four) years with the latest Firefox release: build it yourself.

In other hand, please be gentle to leave the rest of us alone to enjoy the latest Internet technologies!

We do not use it in Enterprise Captive Portals - contrary, we visit media rich sites, which always works better with the latest Firefox.

Oh, and if you read the ChangeLog, our BDFL never thought about longterm support or alikes while adopting the Firefox for Enterprise in the past, BUT he just wanted to delay the backporting of RUST to Slackware 14.2

Today, this RUST adoption does not matter - it is already on tree, so Firefox for Enterprise has ZERO value for casual home users like me and many others.

PS. I believe that instead of wasting his time on maintaining alternate longterm polished turds, our BDFL better could use this spare time on adopting further Wayland things, like at least Weston. We badly need a smaller alternative to our flagship Wayland/Plasma5.

Heck, I managed to run even the stock XFCE on Wayland, using Weston and XWeston!

Same blah you enforce from nowhere.

Alpine Linux provides both. It is not branded as enterprise or so, it does not even label itself as desktop OS.

Void Linux provides both. Same thing.

NetBSD provides both. It is not branded at all (like Slackware in fact).

Sure I could build firefox (or a webkit-thingy) myself, spending a half-day in compilation. Anyone could build any open stuff in any time. This is not an argument, comrade.

You obviously do not know the difference between Slackware -current and a stable release of the distro.
