I have a Windows 8.1 virtual machine. I can't remember why but I needed it for something and I keep it around. With all the updates, and a better Start Menu, Windows 8.1 was quite good. With all the updates Vista was surprisingly good as well. But I booted into a Windows 10 VM recently and couldn't get over how painfully SLoooooowwwwwwwww everything is. There is certainly some Windows-only software I miss -- Total Commander especially (please don't recommend an alternative ; I've tried them all), Screenshot Captor for how it handles callouts (useful for tutorials), Type'n'Spell, some clipboard managers, Xara Graphic Designer. The Linux alternatives to these and other Windows-only programs either fall short, at 75% of the functionality or less, or lie abandoned somewhere. But I have learnt to live with the alternatives, because the downsides to the Windows OS itself are too many, and Microsoft don't seem to know how to fix them.

Report: Just updated to Windows 11

^Yeah, Windows 8 wasn't as terrible as everyone made it out to be. It's still one of the least popular versions though. Makes me wonder if Microsoft learned nothing from making big UI changes like that.

There's nothing to learn because it's not a mistake. A common trick they use is releasing a LOT of major changes all in one big update. When the users push back, they revert some of the changes, while leaving others in. This gives users a sense of progress and leaves them feeling like Microsoft actually listened to feedback even when Microsoft was able to make all the changes they wanted.

It's a shock tactic that works because of the way PC manufacturers sell hardware - Every laptop has the latest Windows installed at the factory.

There are thousands of Windows 7 users who disagree with you: https://gs.statcounter.com/windows-v...top/worldwide/
Even now Windows 7 users outnumber Windows 8 users by more than 4 times.
