Recompiling 9.1 2.4.22 kernel

I appear to be failing miserably at producing a fully working 2.4.22 kernel, it fails to read the network card, even if I've got every network card selected. Thats really baffling me, because its a bog standard integrated intel card in a server. The standard adaptec.s kernel can read it without difficulties.
However, even if I just take the config file off the CD-ROM from the /adaptec.s subdirectory and compile that with just the addition of SMP and ERTC, it doesn't work. Presumably that config file is not the same as the kernel was using?
Does anyone either have an actual copy of the config file used to make the kernel, or is there a way of taking a kernel and producing a config file from that (I find that unlikely, but I'm just a n00b!)

You're not actually compiling the kernel. 2.4.22 comes with Slackware 9.1.

However, did you run netconfig yet?

If you go to a slackware mirror, eg

ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/dist...e-9.1/kernels/

you will find directories for adaptec.s etc, containing the config file.

You could maybe use the settings in this file to help you get the right config
when you recompile. However, if you are going to the trouble of recompiling
why not get the latest 2.4 series kernel from kernel.org? It will be more secure
as the latest vulnerabilities will have been addressed, important for a server
I would have thought.
