I've used Broadcom B43 series adapters just fine, even though it required the firmware.

Atheros are known to be fairly good also.

I have

02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

and it works really well with Linux 3.10.*. As a bonus, it requires no non-free blobs and works with Linux-libre kernel.

For wireless g/n go for an Atheros chipset supported by the ath9k driver

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/...orted_chipsets

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/.../ath9k/devices

Also wikidevi is useful for checking what chipsets the devices you are thinking of buying are based on: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Main_Page

Broadcom bcm43xx devices are best avoided due to proprietary firmware which can not be distributed. I also had an old g device which gave me little trouble under Linux using later kernels and firmware (though installs had to be done over a wired connection), but was unusable under OpenBSD. The proprietary driver also seems to be hit and miss, I could never find one to support my old device.

Atheros works well on my 4 year old Acer Aspire One netbook running Slackware 14.1.

I have a TP-Link wn-821n that works just fine without having to install anything for it. Nice and relatively cheap.

Atheros is a very good choice since they released their open source drivers. Intel pro (I hear) works great out of the box too. But when all else fails, there is always nldwrapper

TP-Link seem to use a lot of Atheros chipsets in their devices, though I can't say if they use Atheros exclusively. I have two devices both with Atheros AR9xxx chipsets and both work well.
