Quick question regarding the kernel source packages

I am currently running Slackware 12 with the 2.6.24.1 kernel and was buzzing through pkgtool cleaning out unused things when i noticed a bunch of old kernel packages. Is it safe for me to uninstall these or should i just leave them be?
Thanks

if you will find something that will need those sources you can install them easily.
Normaly you only might need the source from the kernel you're running...

Well i just delted them and low and behold no kernel will display its options using xconfig, menuconfig, oldconfig, all broken. Guess it is time to go find the disc again

how did you delete them??? what do you mean by all broken? deleting kernel sources can't break anything that was working.the sources normally are only needed to compile something against them...

in pkgtool, the kernel-2.6.21.5 smp, no-arch, etc. those .tgz files. when i uninstalled the package, i noticed my linux folder in /usr/src disappeared. now whenever i try to make a config file i get errors. The good news is though is that it is bootable. just none of my patches like the madwifi work now.

there should be a link in /usr/src/ named linux and pointing at the kernel sources you are using.

yes a symbolic link. ln -s linux-2.6.24.1 linux However it is no longer there, and when i make one, cd to thelinux directory, make xconfig it spews errors at me.

this is what i do:
Code:
cd /usr/src
rm linux && ln -s linux-<current> linux
cd linux
make mrproper
make xconfig
^^^This is where it is failing now^^^
set my config options
make && make modules_install && make install && reboot.
ok here is the error:
Code:
root@Darkstar:/usr/src/linux# make xconfig
