question - dialup connection - rerouting/dividing

hi!
i have regular 56kbps dialup connection.
i want to, at the same time, be able to download some pictures or music from my mail and to use irc/icq without lagging.
i don't know is it possible, but my idea is to have (for example) 3.0kb for downloading and 2.0kb for chat...
can this be done and what i have to do?
does anyone of you have done this?

thanx!

p.s. i have slack 10.2 with 2.4.31 kernel

You need to use 'throttling' -perhaps the easiest way is to use some sort of download manager that allows for that.

Cool

Be cautious. Some ISP's do not like or allow software to interfere with their services. They have the right to discontinue their services if they suspect rule infractions. Its worth checking into.

Yeah, and then you switch to another ISP ... problem solved.
