/proc/acpi/button/lid does not exist

I was trying to use laptop_mode and during shutdown I noticed that my system was complaining about /proc/acpi/button/lid not existing. Sure enough it wasn't there. There is no button directory at all.

Is this normal? If not, which package do I need to reinstall to get it?

my /var/log/packages lists acpid-1.0.4-i486-2

Thanks

You should recompile the kernel to enable CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON option.

Power management options->ACPI Support->Button

The Slackware kernels have all the ACPI support compiled as modules. You may want to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules-2.6.24.5-smp (or the rc.modules version that you use other than the default) and uncomment the various ACPI modules - they can be found nearly at the bottom of that file.

Thanks for your reply. I really did not want to recompile the kernel

Anyways, I looked at the rc.module* file and the only thing I saw was CPU frequency scaling modules...

The rc.modules-2.6.24.5* files in Slackware 12.1 do have commented-out lines for the ACPI modules (button, processor, thermal, fan, dock, bay etc...) - maybe you are running an older version of Slackware.
You can add modprobe commands for them yourself of course - look in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/acpi/ for the available modules.

Eric,

Thanks, I ran the modprobe commands for button and it created the folders/files under /proc/acpi.

However, my /etc/rc.d/rc.modules doesn't have those lines. I'm on Slackware 12.0... that isn't that old.
The kernel version is 2.6.21.

Can you paste those lines in rc.modules or point me to a location that has them? Thanks.

I think I'll start searching on the web as well.

Thanks!
