Problems with Nvidia drivers in slackware..

Hey everyone. I seem to be having some trouble with the Nvidia drivers in Slackware for my geforce 6800 card. I did everything Nvidia's README file said to do after installing the drivers, and it's giving me trouble. I made sure glx was uncommented in the xorg.conf file and I changed Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" under Device. I also made sure dri was commented out. I also ran xdpyinfo and neither glx nor nvidia showed up in the extensions list. I grepped through the Xorg.0.log file and found this: bash-2.05b$ grep -w -i nvidia Xorg.0.log
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x0041) rev 161, Mem @ 0xce000000/24, 0xc0000000/27, 0xcd000000/24, BIOS @ 0xcfee0000/17
(II) Module glx: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

But i am by no means very experienced with Linux so I'm having some trouble figuring out what to do here.. any help would be very appreciated

ok it wasnt working before when I was using kde.. but i just installed dropline gnome.. and wow its working. I went to xterm typed in glx gears and the gears came up at 168 fps. So I guess i dont have a problem anymore.. before it was giving me an error about Xlib and glx on display: 0.0.. but now its working inside dropline gnome. Does dropline gnome fix this stuff or what?

it _may_ be working but a good indicator is when kde boots up you get an nvidia splash screen for a half second. also, I only have a geforce2 and i get about 1500fps in glxgears, i imagine you should get alot more than that if the driver is working w/ the 6800.

not sure on your prob tho sorry. unless maybe you forgot to install as root? probably not but, just a thought.

If you're only getting 168fps then your card is not using the nvidia driver. I get approximately 4000fps with a Ti4400 so you
should be well above that. Most likely you're using Mesa software rendering support. What is the output of,
Code:
glxinfo | less
you should see information like,
Code:
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
and other information about the supported extensions of your card and drivers.
Make sure you have the latest drivers from nvidia, exit the X server and run the the nvidia installer as root.
It sounds like you've done this already, I'm just making sure.
The nvidia driver should install without error. Now while still root,
Code:
lsmod | grep -i nvidia
you should see something like,
Code:
nvidia 4814452 12
this tells you that the nvidia dirver is loaded. If you don't see that then,
Code:
modprobe nvidia
make the necessary changes to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and then start the X server and try glxgears again.

Wow ok.. I think you guys were right and I must have not installed it as root..
I just reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers for my card as Root. Then I edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and now I get the nvidia spash screen before dropline gnome starts. And.. I get 9000-10000 fps with glxgears.
