What device is it looking for? When you look in the preferences, what is entered for CD Player Device? Is it pointed at the device you are actually using, for example if your cd drive is /dev/hdc, is gnome cdplayer pointed at /dev/hdc? Or, if you have a symlink /dev/cdrom is it linked to the device file for the drive you are using? How are the permissions set up on the drive?

Try playing the cd with XMMS to see if the problem is related to gnome's cd player or something is wrong with your cd-rom.
By the way, the other day you activated scsi emulation (if i don't remember wrong) to burn cds, you should point /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0
