I`ve the following problem, my mailserver was a mesh so i decided to reinstall the server, so i removed everything on the disk and repartioned my harddisk after the new installation i rebooted my system and it still uses the 2.6.12.2 kernel, so the kernel is not on my system but he doesn`t understand, i tryed a new kernel 2.6.12.4 but nothing helps, so i formatted my disk again and uses fdisk for new partitions again i followed a new installation, rebooted the system and gues what them same problem exist.
That's quite strange. Did you select 'write the new parttion table' at the end of your use of fdisk ?
It should give you this option and your new table should get rid you of this kernel.
Did you update lilo when changing your kernels. And.. I don't quite understand, you've a partition and running from it and want to format other partitions?
well i didn`t change kernels, the hole system was formatted.
but the stranged thing is that my system everytime says he uses the 2.6.12.2 kernel, and there`s no possible way that the kernel still exist on my harddrive.
this evening i formatted my disk again into fat32, after that i uses linux fdisk and make /dev/hda1 (swap) and /dev/hda2 ( / ) hda2 is reiserfs. installed slackware again and gues what!!!!???!!! i still have the problem if the installation is finished, after the reboot the system says again that he is using the 2.6.12.2 kernel and he is missing his /lib/modules/2.6.12.2.
i ask tomorrow my technical boss maybe he nows what is happend.
That is probably because lilo isn't updated yet. Lilo is minding its own business up in the MBR and you suddenly reformat the references in lilo. Therefore, I would suggest that you update lilo using a livecd (mount your root and boot partitions, configure /mount/location/hd#/etc/lilo.conf, then run /mount/location/hd#/sbin/lilo). That way, lilo is updated in the MBR.
Just remember that just because you reformatted your boot partition, lilo doesn't necessarily drop the old kernels.
