problem with new external hardrive


its a barracuda 300 gig ultra ude in a ppa-usa 1912 enclosure. it only works if i plug it into windows then linux. if o dont it wont even show in dmesg. i have all my usb stuff compileing into my kernel

could you post portions of your kernel .config file? your usb section and your scsi section. drivers>usb, drivers>scsi

it sounds like the drive isnt spinning up until i plug it into windows

this is just a guess, but try compiling your usb support as modules. you shouldn't need ohci, its for old old usb pre 1.0 i think.

the wierd part is my ipod works as is. so should i still make them modules? and what ones?

ok i booted the windows box with slax and it worked. i conclude that my laptop isnt putting out the right current and/or voltage needed for the drive to work

Yeah, you may be right after all. USB support, be it in module form or integrated into kernel shouldn't make any difference. At least, it should not interefere with the drive being recognized.

BTW, ohci_hcd is still required in order to make USB 1.1 work !!

but if your laptop isn't putting out enough voltage, it wouldn't work in windows either. Since you aren't getting any dmesg entries it isn't finding it. My thinking was if you compiled them as modules you might get some dmesg entry.

but the windows box is a desktop and my linux box is a different laptop. also my ipod and camera work on mass storage via usb
