problem with mouse and Keyboard with X in slackware13 64bit

For some reason, starting this morning, when i run startx, my laptop mouse and keyboard give no imput to the x system. This is strange. while im running level 3 (the basic command interface, i can move the mouse and type just fine. but when i type startx, KDE boots up, and my mouse doesnt respond. I cant kill x by pressing ctrl+Alt+Backspace either, which leads me to believe its a problem with KDE recieving messages from both the mouse and keyboard. Also, the Akondai(spelling?) says that my audio device has been removed, when ive done no such thing. Is there any way to fix this, short of reinstalling x entirely (id hate to do that because i just finished 6 days of making it perfect...)

Same thing has just happened to me also, it is all users and all desktop environments, and the errors when starting X from run level 3 seem to be pointing towards DBUS and HAL. Thinking that it might have been something to do with the upgrade of seamonkey today I removed the update. No effect. I am going to try an upgradepkg --reinstall from my installcd copy that is on the HD. I was fortunate that I still had 12.2 on the system, it was due for removal.

i dont even have internet enabled automatically, so i dont think an upgrade would take place anyway... i dont think its a problem with seamonkey. Is there any way to fix this? i put in my boot disk, and re configured my mouse and keyboard input, but that didnt work. does anyone know whats wrong here?

Yeah, I'm guessing you don't have hald running. What is the output of 'ps ax | grep hald' ?

So start up hal and try again :-) 'sh /etc/rc.d/rc.hald' (as root) should start it up.

Then start up X and let us know if that solves the problem.

i started up hal. when i started it, it said "/~really long filename~/dbus/pid is existant. delete this if it is not in use"

or something along those lines. i started x, but that gave me the same problem as before. should i delete that file?

I have re-installed the packages on my machine, but I still have the problem. I am now deleting the dbus file. Will get back to you all.

i dont think its a problem with dbus or hal, to be honest. both mouse and keyboard work fine under a runtime 3 environment. doesnt that use dbus and hal?

So if you boot into runlevel 3, and then startx, your mouse and keyboard work fine? That's not what you said above.

Or do you simply mean that your mouse and keyboard work on the console? Because there is a difference. Xorg uses HAL to detect input devices these days (unless you explicitly disable this in your xorg.conf file) while the console doesn't.

No effect deleting the file anyway. As it is all desktops and all users it has to be X related, re-installing X doesn't help, it started suddenly with both of us, my computer was fine this morning. Slackware 12.2 (runlevels 3 & 4) and Slackware64-13.0 (runlevel 3) work, so it is not hardware related. Slackware64-13.0 KDE 4.2 keeps booting and tells me it cannot find my sound card as well as the mouse and keyboard being dead, when I hard reboot, the error message shows a dbus error.

What is the line you need to add to xorg.conf and I will test.
